This is a treatment given to the patients having problem of gum recession. Gum recession is a symptom of gum disease. The technique was invented by Jhon Chao, D.D.S. Pinhole is the best alternative to gum grafting.

People who need pinhole treatment:

The persons with the following problems must be given pinhole treatment:

People with gum diseases like gum recession

People who follow wrong brushing methods

Due to the side effects of medications through which periodontal diseases may increase

When there is problem with traditional methods of gum surgery and orthodontic treatments

Instead of gum grafting you can use this as good alternative

People who need healthy and attractive smile on their face

Benefits of pinhole technique:

Best alternative to other gum surgeries

Their is no bleeding or swelling after the surgery

You can get recovered quickly

Many teeth can be treated at once

Corrects the gum recession

Their won’t be a problem of uncomfortable sutures

Long lasting and natural looking

Jhon Chao’s pinhole treatment:
The treatment is painless as only needle is used in the entire treatment. Using this a hole is made on the gum tissue and special instrument is used to loose the gum tissue by expanding it over the gum line. This helps the exposed root structure get covered. For the entire treatment there is no need of sutures, grafts and incisions. Simply adjusting the existing tissue of the patient is enough.

This is entirely different from the traditional method of gum grafting which uses the donor tissue to re-build the gum line. The soft tissue taken from the same person is used in this treatment. Patients feel better after this treatment. This is the way patients get benefited with pinhole technique.

Dental care after treatment:
If patients take proper care after the treatment, it lasts for long time without any side effects. As all dental treatments this may also have some minor complications which can be avoided with proper dental care and dental check up. This treatment is considered as a permanent solution for gum recession or gum diseases.

To avoid damage in the surgical area avoid brushing in that area for few days and don’t brush tooth hard because this may cause pain in the surgical area. Better follow the suggestion given by your dentist for best results after the treatment.

Connection between the teeth and the heart and how teeth effects heart?
If your teeth are healthy, you will have good health and a healthy heart. If you pay attention towards your dental hygiene automatically you will have a good smile on your face which is related to the heart.

Researches say that several gum diseases may lead to heart disease. If this is the case most of the people facing the oral health problem must also have the heart problems as they don’t care for their teeth and health.

Experts also agree with this because, the heart and teeth have the common problem called as inflammation which is related to the gum diseases. And some researchers say that 90% of all the diseases, including heart diseases have the symptoms and dentists also go for the oral cheek up if the person is having the heart problems.

Symptoms shown by teeth about the heart

If your teeth are having gum disease, then ultimately it leads to heart problem like heart attacks.

There is a major chance of getting infected with the gum diseases.

Smoking may lead to teeth and heart issues.

People with poor nutrition also have the heart and teeth effects.

Patients with diabetes.

In men the connection is more common.

How to prevent the heart diseases caused by teeth problems?

Maintain a healthy mouth by brushing and cleaning the mouth with fluoride contained water

Plaque can be reduced to 20% if you rinse your mouth regularly

Smoking and chewing tobacco should be avoided.

Taking healthy diet and nutrients helps your teeth stay stronger

If the person is having the heart problem, then the dentist will advise them to see a cardiologist.

Follow the instruction given by your dentist and have a proper medical and dental care

Tooth loss is the symptom of the heart disease, therefore it is important to take care of your teeth.

These precautions may avoid the gum diseases which leads to the protection of the heart. This is how you can have your heart healthy by having the oral care.

Studies show that taking the proper dental care will keep your heart healthy and you lead a long life. If followed the above precautions it is good for you as well as your health. So, better to know the connection between the teeth and heart before you go for a dentist or a cardiologist.

The post How Dental Health and Heart are Connected first appeared on BIG-TOPICS.COM.

Space maintainer, an device used by dentists or orthodontists made from metal or acrylic. It can either be cemented or be removed from the child’s mouth. Its purpose is to maintain space and allow the permanent tooth to erupt in place. There may be the need of the space maintainers if children lose their teeth at an early age, or have a primary tooth extracted due to dental decay.

In this article, we will discuss the need, maintenance and the types of dental space maintainers.

Need for dental space maintainers

When the child loses his/her teeth in early age.

Its main purpose is to maintain space and allow the permanent tooth to erupt in place.

If the space is not maintained, there is a possibility of shifting of teeth to open space.

In some cases primary tooth may be missing, in order to avoid the coming (permanent) tooth erupt properly in space, space maintainers are required.

Moreover, space maintainers are used to ensure enough room for the permanent tooth.

Types of dental space maintainers
Space maintainers are of two types: fixed and removable

Removable: These space maintainers are similar to the appliance used in orthodontic treatment and are made from acrylic material.

Fixed: There are four different kinds of fixed space maintainers; crown and loop, distal shoe, unilateral and lingual.

Unilateral and crown and loop: This type of space maintainers are placed on the one side of the mouth. The unilateral space maintainer when placed will wrap around the outside of the tooth connecting to a metal loop that holds the space intact. The crown and loop space maintainers are the actual crown covering the tooth and are attached to the loop so as to ensure that there is enough space for erupting tooth.

Distal shoe space maintainer: This type of space maintainer is generally used for un-erupted permanent molar tooth. This is the most complicated maintainer, as the metal is inserted in the gums for keeping the space open from closing. The dentist will also monitor the progress of eruption of permanent molar.

Lingual space maintainer: This maintainers are bilateral in nature and are cemented to the molars connected by a wire. This is usually used for one missing tooth.

Care and maintenance
At first space maintainers may feel unusual. But after a few days you get used to it. For keeping the gum tissues healthy, your child needs to brush their teeth regularly. When there are space maintainers are applied, your child should avoid sticky or hard food and chew gum and candies. This can loosen the band and get easily caught in the wires. See the dentist at regular intervals and get your space maintainer’s position checked, as if they become loose, there is a possibility of swallowing or inhaling through the lungs.

Finally, see to it that your child should not push on the space maintainers using their fingers, which can bend or loosen the wires.

The post Dental Space Maintainers first appeared on BIG-TOPICS.COM.

Bottle decay

Thumb sucking

Tongue thrusting

Lip Sucking

Early Tooth Loss

1. Bottle Decay:
Bottle decay is the dental teeth decay caused by the frequent contact of sugary solution or milk with the teeth. It mostly affects the upper front teeth.

Causes:

Unswallowed milk in the mouth during bedtime.

Frequent contact of sugary liquids in mouth

If untreated bottle decay it causes pain and baby unable to chew or eat in turn crooked teeth in the later ages.

2. Thumb Sucking:
However, it is a healthy habit of sucking thumb or objects in the infant stage. The main cause for thumb sucking is stress.

Prevention:

Sucking of thumb in children is mainly to control stress. This can be prevented by knowing the cause.

Cover the finger with the band aid

Take out the thumb after your child fall a sleep

If all these are not work out, Consult your dentist and dental appliances are applied over the mouth which prevents the baby to stop sucking.

If it continuing after 3 years causes to protrude teeth from their position, misalignment of jaw and difficulty in pronouncing some letters.

3. Tongue Thrusting:
Tongue thrusting is similar to thumb sucking. It is the placement of tongue in the wrong position during swallowing that is, attaching the tongue tip to the teeth.

Causes:

Thumb sucking

Hereditary factors

Prevention:

Thumb Thrusting can be prevented by placing a night guard during bed time

Oral habit training which re-educates the muscle associated with the swallowing of food or liquids.

If it is untreated, leads to the misalignment of teeth and difficulty in pronouncing some words.

4. Lip Sucking:
Lip sucking is the holding of lower lip between the upper and lower front teeth. If it is uncontrolled leads to infection around the lips and redness around the lips. In some children it is a habit in combination with the thumb sucking or tongue thrusting or alone itself.

Prevention:

Take out the lip from the mouth during sleeping

Consult Orthodontist and ask about the treatment

5. Early Tooth Loss:
Early tooth loss is the loss of premature tooth before the permanent tooth emerges.

Causes:

Tooth decay leads to tooth loss

Lack of enough jaw space

Injury

Before any surgery, anesthesia is given to reduce the sensitivity to pain. Administration of anesthesia produces some discomfort to patients. To avoid the discomfort, advanced methods of anesthesia in dental surgeries have come into existence.

In this article we will discuss about the advanced methods of anesthesia, how it works and its advantages.

Computer generated anesthesia: This is one of the methods. Normally pain at the time of injection is mainly due to the pressure created by the liquid on the nerves. These technique reduces the pain by inducing the anesthesia slowly. It is a device which contains two parts. One is a computer and another is a pen like device connected to the computer.

How it works?

Initially a topical local anesthesia is given at the site to numb the area. Then a pen like device is placed at the site of injection and it connects to the computer with a tube and flow of anesthesia is controlled on the computer. This takes one minute to anesthetize the area.

Advantages:

No pain during induction of anesthesia

Accurate amounts of anesthesia can be delivered

Easy to handle

Vibrajets: Vibrajets are battery operated device attached to the needle. This is used to deliver local anesthesia without any pain. It is one of the advanced methods to deliver anesthesia without inducing pain.

How it works?

A battery attached to the needle produces slight vibrations during delivering of anesthesia. This stimulates the nerve ending and blocks the impulses to reach the brain.

Advantages:

No pain while inducing anesthesia

Onset of action is very fast.

Electronic dental anesthesia: Electronic dental anesthesia consist of a battery powered device connected to a control unit. This produces low voltage current that blocks the nerves to reach the pain signals to brain.

How it works?

In this method two small pieces of sponges are placed at the site of surgery. These sponges connects to the control box where patient can control the level of anesthesia. In this no anesthesia is used to anesthetize the area. The low voltage produced by the battery, blocks the nerve to transmit impulses to brain.

Advantages:

Safe and reliable

No anesthetic agent is used

No allergic reactions

Level of anesthesia can be controlled

Most of the dentists prefer the above mentioned anesthesia because they are much better than the traditional ones.

Dental implants are important procedure to improve the functionality of teeth, etc. Dental implants have certain advantages and disadvantages. This article discusses them briefly.

Advantages
Following are six advantages of dental implants.

1. Better function of mouth
Functioning of implanted tooth is similar to your natural teeth. Jaws and teeth work as if they are normal. You can eat hard foods as you like. Your teeth and jaw can chew and bite food in a better way than before.

2. Can eat all types of food
If you have missing teeth, you are unable to eat certain foods because chewing and biting becomes difficult. With the help of implanted tooth, you can eat all types of food including hard food.

3. Improved oral hygiene
Having dental implants, it is easier to clean the teeth by brushing and flossing as is the case with with natural teeth. There is no risk of implanted tooth getting damaged as it is in case of dentures and bridges.

4. Appearance of face improves
With loss of tooth or teeth, muscles of face sag and it gives an aging look. Dental implants produce new bone tissue as a result of making the jaw bone strong and thick, which leads to better functionality of facial muscles. Dental implants give a younger look in terms of appearance.

5. Durable
Implanted tooth last longer. The implants last for years or even for a lifetime if you take care of them properly.

6. Comfortable and is convenient
The impression implanted teeth is same as with the natural tooth. These implants give comfort in terms of eating, caring, etc. People around you may not differentiate between natural and implanted tooth.

Dental implants are convenient as you need not worry about the tooth getting loose, changing position or falling from your mouth. There is no problem of removing and replacing as done in case of dentures.

Disadvantages
There are three disadvantages of dental implants.

1. Implants are costly
Dental implants involve huge expenses. They are more expensive when compared to other treatments such as dentures or bridges.

2. Lengthy procedure
Dental implants are time-consuming as there are two surgeries, which need to heel before going to place the implants. You need at least three months for the surgeries to heal. Thus, the whole procedure might last up to 6-9 months depending on the condition of jaw.

3. Involves surgeries
A thought of surgery is scary for some people. As it is a surgical process, it involves bleeding, swelling, pain, etc. It is because this reason that few people opt for dental implants.

Conclusion
As there are advantages of implanted teeth, so are disadvantages too. If you are opting for dental implants, make sure to discuss with the dentist the pros and cons before you undergo the procedure.

The post Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Implants first appeared on BIG-TOPICS.COM.

One of the major dental conditions is tooth sensitivity, which affects half of the population in 20-50 years age group across the world. Tooth sensitivity is preventable and can be cured when it occurs if responded with immediate treatment from qualified dentists. Reading this article, you will get to know what dental sensitivity is, and the available treatment for it.

Dental sensitivity
Dental sensitivity or sensitivity in teeth is a dental condition in which you feel intense pain in teeth while taking cool or hot foods.

Teeth contain several tiny channels that are not visible to human eye. These channels run from base to top of the teeth and are covered by a material called enamel. The enamel covers the surface of teeth and protects blood capillaries from being exposed to outer environment. Usually the enamel is lost due to brushing too hard or having regular acidic diet (a lot of lemon, etc.).

When food comes in contact with blood capillaries through entering channels, it causes irritation and pain in the teeth. When you get a painful sensation in teeth while taking hot and cold foods, it indicates that you are suffering from teeth sensitivity.

Ways to treat dental sensitivity
Dental sensitivity can be easily cured. Dentists suggest to use desensitizing toothpastes. These toothpastes help close channels that are open due to erosion of enamel coating. While purchasing a desensitizing toothpaste, look for recommendation of American Dental Association (ADA) for safety. When the desensitizing toothpaste does not lower teeth sensitivity, dentists recommend filling channels that are open.

If the dental sensitivity is due to loss of gum tissue, dentists recommend for a surgical procedure – gum graft. In this procedure, part of gum tissue is cut and the cut out portion is used to seal the root where gum tissue has been lost. If the pain is intolerable (hyper-sensitivity), dentists recommend root canal treatment to reduce pain.

Tooth sensitivity is more common in women than in men. It is common in those suffering from gum problems, people having undergone dental bleaching procedures and those brushing teeth too hard.

Do not underestimate oral health. To keep your oral health in good condition, you need to educate yourself on oral hygiene, brush with a soft-bristled toothbrush twice a day and avoid foods of acidic nature to avoid eroding of the enamel.

The post Dental Sensitivity – Ways to Treat first appeared on BIG-TOPICS.COM.

Teeth fillings are used to treat a cavity. The dentist will remove the decayed portion of the tooth and fill the area where the cavity once lived. The function of filling is to repair cracked or broken teeth and the teeth that are worn out due to misuse. The dentist will first numb the area around the teeth that is to be filled with a local anesthetic. Next the decayed area is removed by a drill or using an air abrasion instrument or laser. The dentist will test the area to make sure that the decay has been removed. The dentist will prepare a space for filling in the tooth by cleaning the cavity and bacteria. Finally the dentist will prepare a composite material to fill the space, remove the excess material and polish the final restoration.

Composite resin filling:
It is made from a mixture of powdered glass and plastic resin which can resemble similar to a natural tooth. It can be used for filling small and large areas especially for the front or visible parts of teeth.

Amalgam:
It is a metallic filling material made up of a mixture of mercury and powdered alloy materials such as silver, tin, zinc and copper. Amalgam fillings are cheapest and they have a silver coloring. This is a metal which expands and contracts with hot, cold. They are usually filled in the back chewing teeth.

Glass Ionomer cement:
This type of filling is a mixture of glass called fluoroaluminosilicate and organic acid. It is used for filling in front teeth, around the neck of teeth and roots. It is suitable for people with lot of decay in the part of the tooth that extends below the gum.

Cast Gold:
This filling is made from gold mixed with other metals. It is expensive than other fillings and doesn’t corrode. It can be used for filling inlays, onlays and crowns.

Ceramics:
It is commonly made of porcelain and costs as much as gold or even more. They are tooth colored and resistant to staining.

A good quality and suitable dental filling material used for filling the decayed tooth will ensure less dental problems in future.

The post What are the Different Types of Dental Filling Materials first appeared on BIG-TOPICS.COM.

When a tooth is lost due to the injuries or is affected by diseases caused by bacteria, gaps or missing tooth occurs. The gaps so formed between the teeth will make the affected person to discomfort while speaking, chewing and negative expressions. Fillings are also used to repair cracked or broken teeth and teeth that have been worn down from misuse. So, the dentist replaces or restores the tooth in the areas where tooth is lost by using some dental fillings. Before going to start filling in the decayed portion of the teeth, dentist numbs the area around the tooth and cleans the tooth surface by removing decayed material caused by bacteria with respective dental solutions. Then, an instrument is used for drying the affected area of the patient mouth in order to remove the bacteria. Then dentist checks the affected part by performing some test whether all the decay has been removed or not. Once the affected part becomes clean, the dentist prepares the necessary fillings in order to fill the affected portion to make the patients teeth to function normally. The dentist puts some liner on the tooth root to protect the nerve. Then he places tooth which matches the original one. These materials are applied in the layers to look as the original tooth. Then blue light is used for hardening each layer applied. After completing the layering process, dentist removes the excess material that comes out while applying. Then the dentist shapes the material according to the desired outcome and then polishes for final restoration.

These fillings can be done by using different materials available based on the location and extent of the decay, cost of material, dentist recommendation etc,. Materials such as gold, porcelain, silver amalgam, or tooth-colored, plastic and glass materials called composite resin fillings can be used to store the tooth and it prevents further tooth decay.

The post Want to Know About Dental Filling? first appeared on BIG-TOPICS.COM.
