]]> The tip of the tongue (TOT) phenomenon is an example of knowing something that cannot right away be recalled. TOT is a near-universal experience with memory recollection involving complexity retrieving a famous word or familiar name. When experiencing TOT, people feel that the blocked word is on the verge of being recovered. Despite failure in finding the word, people have the feeling that the blocked word is symbolically “on the tip of the tongue.” Inaccessibility and the sense of imminence are two key features of an operational definition of TOTs (A.S. Brown, 1991). The experience of TOT appeared in non-academic literature as early as 1885. Anton Chekhov’s short story “A Horsey Name” is about the main character’s tip-of-the-tongue knowledge involving a surname. In 1890, pioneering psychologist William James discussed the phenomenon in his text The Principles of Psychology. James described the TOT state as “a gap that is intensely active”.

In 1966, Harvard psychologists Roger Brown and David McNeill reported the first experiential investigation of the tip-of-the-tongue state. They recounted, “he signs of it were unmistakable” and “he would appear to be in mild torment, something like on the brink of a sneeze, and if he found the word his relief was considerable.” They also found that TOT is a fairly worldwide phenomenon; TOTs occur about once a week and increase as you age, and they’re often caused by proper names. Further, people experiencing TOT are often able to access the first letter of the “target word” fairly precisely and they also bring up words related to the “target word.” Finally, R. Brown and McNeill have some good news: target words are retrieved during the experience of a TOT phenomenon about half of the time. Although it is not explicitly called by this name it is interesting to note that TOT is briefly considered by Aristotle in “On Memory and Reminiscence”, in his discussion on recall.

]]> The World Boxing Association (WBA) is a boxing association that sanctions official matches, and awards the WBA world championship title, at the expert level. It was before known as the National Boxing Association, it is one of four major organizations recognized by IBHOF which authorize world championship boxing bouts, alongside the IBF, WBC and the WBO. The original sanctioning body of professional boxing, the World Boxing Association can be traced back to the original National Boxing Association, organized in 1921; the first bout known by the organization being the Jack Dempsey-Georges Carpentier Heavyweight Championship bout in New Jersey, USA. The NBA was created by representatives from thirteen American states to counterbalance the influence the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) wielded in the boxing world. This frequently meant that the NBA and the NYSAC crowned dissimilar world champions in the same division, important to confusion about who was the real champion.

The International Boxing Research Organization describes the early NBA in this way, “Originally more comparable to the present American Association of Boxing Commissions than to its offspring and successor, the NBA sanctioned title bouts, published lists of outstanding challengers, withdrew titular recognition, but did not attempt to appoint its own title bout officials or otherwise impose its will on championship fights. It also did not conduct purse bids or collect ‘sanctioning fees.'” In 1962 the NBA, with the enlargement of boxing’s popularity world-wide, changed its name to the World Boxing Association. The organization remained mainly American until 1974, however. In that year, two Panamanian boxing figures named Rodrigo Sanchez and Elias Cordova manipulated the WBA system to give a majority of votes to nations in Latin America. Gilberto Mendoza has been the President of the WBA since 1982. The WBA in the 1990s moved its central offices from Panama City, Panama, to Caracas, Venezuela. In January of 2007 it moved its offices again to Panama.

  • First you choose the scoring format generally official tennis games are played until one player reaches 11 points. You should always keep in mind that you cannot win by a single point. A player should be ahead by 2 points before he or she can be declared as the winner.
  • Next serve the ball by releasing it from the palm of your hands. Toss the ball upwards to reach the height of approximately six inches above the table. Strike the ball downward, making it bounces on your side of the table and into your opponent’s side. The ball should not touch the net during the serve.
  • Never hit the ball in a twice, if you fail to hit the ball either on a serve or after your opponent had sent it back to your court, then your opponent takes the point.
  • Hit the ball after it had bounced off the table. It is illegal to volley the ball before it has touched the table’s surface. The ball should bounce once on each side as it travels from one player to another. If it so happens that the player hit the ball too hard it missed the table altogether, the point goes to the other player.
  • Never touch the ball or table by your free hand during the play, if this happens the player who committed the offense loses the point. The ball should freely bounce on the table during a rally. And also the player’s clothing should not touch the net as well.
  • In a doubles game, a player should serve diagonally from the right side of their court into their opponent’s right. The white line painted across the table divides the left and right court. However, in a singles game, these lines don’t mean anything.

]]> Out of Gas: The End of the Age of Oil is a 2004 book written by David Goodstein. It explains peak oil and the future of civilization. The book gives the technical view that the age of petroleum is coming to an end, and the future is hazardously insecure.

In this book, Goodstein rejected the notion that when peak will occur new substitute sources of energy will be capable to continue the industry in the same way as it is at present. Proof for imminent decrease in world oil production and important economic impact and the feasibility of alternative sources of energy have been presented in the book.

RSS booksThe New York Times Book Review published a review of the book calling it “a book that is more influential for being brief, with the clarity and gentle touch of a master teacher”. Publishers Weekly commented on the book. Paul Raeburn wrote in The New York Times that Goodstein’s prediction regarding peak oil and future of civilization is based on an understanding of physics and thermodynamics, and on a simple observation about natural resources. He described Out of Gas: The End of the Age of Oil in The New York Times as “a book that is more influential for being brief takes a detour to explain some of the basics of energy budgets, thermodynamics and entropy, and it does so with the clearness and gentle touch of a master teacher”. Brian Braiker described the book in Newsweek as an “important one” where Goodstein gives the explanation of the science behind his prediction.

Just look at Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey (“Newlyweds”), Britney Spears and Kevin Federline (“Britney and Kevin: Chaotic”), and Travis Barker and Shanna Moakler (“Meet the Barkers”). Reports of two new splits hit the media today. Hulk Hogan’s wife, Linda Hogan, allegedly filed for divorce from her husband, one of her co-stars on their reality show “Hogan Knows Best.” According to an Associated Press report posted on Yahoo! News, Hulk Hogan and his wife had been presence marital counseling and were submissive prior to the divorce filing.

In a separate news report from the Associated Press on Yahoo!News, former “The Bachelor” competitor Mary Delgado was arrested just after late night on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Delgado had appeared on “The Bachelor: After the Final Rose” a few days earlier with her beau, fisherman Byron Velvick. The pair was advertising by “The Bachelor” as one of its two success stories over its 11-season run. What accurately leads to the demise of these happy Hollywood couples who appear bound for happily ever after until their reality shows kill their romance? Paradoxically, it may just be that none of these elf tale romances were built on the firm ground of reality. Take our “Bachelor” couple, for example. The premise of “The Bachelor” is that a lucky but lonesome bachelor gets to choose among 25 contestants vying for his affection. Over the course of six weeks, the contestants and their bachelor get to canoodle in every fantasy situation conceivable, from luxury suites to helicopter rides. Once the contestants are adequately optimistic and “in love,” the bachelor picks out a huge rock and is supposed to propose to the winning lady love in his life.

But unluckily, the reality of “The Bachelor” scenario is that none of it is actually real, as in real life. The challenger and the bachelor are playing a game, not dating or getting to know one another in real life circumstances that us normal people have to slush through. “The Bachelor” is an ornately constructed fantasy land for grown ups who still believe in fairy tales and badly want to win the game and get the suggestion and the big, shiny diamond ring. As for our unlucky reality show celebrities, it is not far fetched to say that their reality shows depicted characters rather than real personalities. Grand romantic gestures, luxury surprise getaways, and fabulous sex adventures make for dramatic television and exciting lives. But sustaining such drama for any length of time is impossible. Once again, real reality, not reality show reality, is far more difficult. When the cameras stop rolling on these famous couples, the dream seems to end as well.

I like to spend my holiday in farm house of my grand father in Australia. It is located in a serene and calm place, all away from pollution, work tensions, mobiles, and computers. Even though it is situated in a far away village, it does not lack modern looks. Even there are modern transport facilities and the medical help is always available at sufficient reach. Walking in green lands, feeding the cattle, riding horses, and most of all breathing in pure air are the things that always make me feel happy.

Most of the furnishings in the farm house are imported from various places to make the house have a grandeur look. All the furnishings ranging from wall paintings to farm sinks were chosen carefully to provide the farm house look much better and make it very comfortable to live in there.
